Rip Rap
Riprap, also known as rip rap, rubble, shot rock, rock armor, or rip-rap, is a type of rock or other material used to armor shorelines, streambeds, bridge abutments, pilings, and other shoreline structures against erosion or water damage. It's made from a variety of rock types, commonly granite or limestone, and typically involves the use of large, heavy stones. The stones are placed in a particular arrangement to absorb and dissipate the force of water, slowing the process of erosion. Riprap is often used in civil engineering, road construction, landscaping, and other applications where controlling water or wind erosion is critical.
